The Vaishno Devi shrine itself sits partway up Trikuta Hill, reached by a roughly 12–13 km trek (or pony/palanquin/helicopter) from Katra, the base town where most pilgrims stay and start their yatra registration.
Given the current road distance, most of our Katra bookings are either a one-way drop with a flight back from Jammu, or a multi-day round trip with an overnight halt around Jalandhar or Pathankot each way.
Road update: The Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway now under construction will eventually bring this down to around 6 hours, but the Punjab section isn't complete yet. Until then, the honest current road time on the existing highway is closer to 12–13 hours.

Katra is around 630 km from Delhi, currently about 12 to 13 hours by road on the existing highway. A new expressway under construction will eventually cut this substantially, but it isn't fully open yet.
Most pilgrims fly or take the train to Jammu and use a local taxi for the shorter Jammu–Katra leg (around 45–50 km). We can also arrange a one-way drop to Katra if you'd rather drive out and fly back.
Yes, pilgrims register for a Yatra Slip at Katra (or online in advance) before starting the trek — your driver can point you to the registration counter on arrival.
On foot, by pony, palanquin, battery-operated vehicle for part of the route, or by helicopter for those who prefer to skip the trek — availability varies by season and demand.
